What’s in the Garden?

The goal of the zen garden is to promote calmness and a place of tranquility for our community. In pursuit of this goal, the garden is full of herbs and flowers that help with de-stressing and having a better mindset.

Delphinium

Delphinium elatum

  • Delphinium has toxic roots and seeds
  • Very fragrant flower
  • Attracts butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds

Lily

Lilium

  • Known as the most fragrant flower and used in many perfumes
  • White Lily can be used for pain, swelling, and coughs
  • Lilies are edible and are used in teas
  • The most nutritious part of a lily is the bulb
  • Lilies reduce stress and promote calmness

German Chamomile

Matricaria recutita

  • Promotes sleep and helps reduce anxiety
  • Can be soothing to the stomach
  • Can help reduce blood sugar
  • Edible and used in teas
  • Side effects of sleepiness and slow breathing
  • Is known to help with menstrual pain

Cone Flowers

Echinacea

  • Cone Flowers get their name from its flowers forming around the center forming a cone like shape
  • Helps strengthen the immune system
  • Cone Flower petals are edible
  • Known to help with the skin
  • Reduces feelings of anxiety

Cupids Dart

Catananche caerulea

  • Attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees
  • Deer Resistant

Greek Oregano

Origanum vulgare

  • Often used in many foods as garnish and used in salads
  • Can reduce cough and help with digestion
  • Contains high levels of antioxidants
  • Known to be good for hair
  • Can help alleviate stress and promotes relaxation

Anise Hyssop

Agastache foeniculum

  • Anise Hyssops have edible leaves
  • Used in many salads, jams, and seasonings
  • Is used in potpourri which is an all naturally made air freshener
  • Can be used in tea
  • Helps reduce fevers and is used to treat respiratory issues as well as burns
  • Known to help the stomach
  • Also Known to have “mood lifting qualities”
  • Can be used as an antidepressant

  • Rosemary is edible and used in various garnishes
  • The only part inedible in Rosemary is the stem
  • Not all variants of Rosemary are edible
  • Lowers cortisol
  • Can reduce anxiety

Lemon Verbena

  • Often used in alcoholic beverages
  • Causes some skin irritation
  • Can be used for ice creams and custards
  • Helps boost the immune system
  • Known as a good remedy for stress and anxiety
  • Also used in teas

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus

  • Eucalyptus had edible leaves when cooked but is otherwise toxic
  • Pleasant and fragrant smell
  • Can help with insect bites and arthritis
  • Known for its calming and soothing effect on the mind

Lemon Balm

  • Lemon Balm is fully edible
  • Has a soothing and calming fragrant
  • Known for its wide array of medical uses
  • Can help with weight loss
  • Used in skin care
  • Can be used to treat bug bites
  • Helps combat hair loss
  • Can help reduce anxiety and promote sleep

  • French Lavender tends to have a stronger smell and more vibrant color

  • Belongs to the mint family
  • Creeping Thyme is completely edible
  • Thyme does not lose its flavor after the flower dies
